Arizona wants to go to 85 mph (137 km/h).
Other Western states that initially proposed 85 mph THIS YEAR (all in one year!) included Montana, Nevada, and South Dakota, but they all settled for 80 mph from their existing 75 after going through legislature. Seems like an effective strategy for raising speed limits to 80. Texas currently has the highest speed limit at 85 mph for a 40 mile stretch of toll road. Utah, Idaho, and Wyoming are at 80 mph maximums. The future of motoring in America looks bright to me, just move out West!

its pretty nice, but to be fair, most of the stuff you pass at 80 mph isn't worth going slower for anyway, not on i80, i15 anyway

...and people will continue to drive 90 on the I-80 between Chicago and Reno.

The general rule in Chicago is 40 over in the left lane. I80 is one of the slower routes.

Lake Shore Drive, where speed limits are more like "suggestions"

With the tight concrete barriers at lake shore you feel like your doing 120, then you look down and realise you are doing 120...

Exactly, I don't think I am an old grandma, but with the 75 mph we have on most rural interstates people do 5-10 over, between that and idiots who text and look at social media while they are driving, I don't really think they need to bump the limit, I can hardly believe I am saying that, but where there are no people and little traffic is where it should be higher, and people already drive fast their anyway.
If you want to see how fast your car will go drive North central Nebraska sometime, 110 in a first generation RX-7, 12o in a 1st generation SE-R those were the days...

Why? In a world where efficiency and safety are the most important thing to legislators, why would they EVER make such a high speed limit? After 55mph, your efficiency significantly drops off. At 85mph, your car is nearly 30% less efficient.
And as far as safety is concerned, people can hardly handle their 4000lb missiles, between texting, tweeting, instabooking, selfie-ing and looking at naked ladies, while driving even at 60mph. Every second that people are staring at their phone or whatever, they will be traveling an extra 30 feet vs 65mph, for a total of 120 feet per second. Do people not realize what can happen in 120 feet? And let's not forget how much braking distance is increase, or how much less it takes to spin out at that speed. What makes people think 85 is a good idea?

Yeah, but people already DO 95 in Arizona. Hell, I've done a sustained 110 from Phoenix to Tucson, and was still getting passed (even by minivans).
